My husband is notorious for walking and talking in his sleep. This
night was worse than usual and I wasn’t getting any sleep. I couldn’t
imagine what he was dreaming about but it was making me really mad. He
just kept squirming and moaning louder and louder! Before I could
smother him with my pillow, he jumped out of bed and ran for the back
door. As mad as I was at him for keeping me awake, I had come to my
senses about smothering him with my pillow. I grabbed my cell phone to
call my neighbor - who is a fireman – in case my husband did something
stupid like climb a tree or fall into the pool.
I followed my husband outside. He was frozen in a trancelike state staring at the sky. I looked toward the sky too. It was 4:00 in the morning and the sky looked as bright as noon over the trees, maybe even brighter. I looked behind me at the sky on the other side of the house. It was still dark. Being nervous after the devastating fire at the Sofa Super Store a few months before, I started to call the fire department. As bright as it was, it occurred to me that if something was on fire I should have been able to smell smoke. The light was mesmerizing. I couldn’t help but stare at it either. It made me calm and excited all at the same time. I snapped this photograph with my cell phone. Seconds later, the light was gone.
To this day, I have no idea what caused the light. It wasn’t a fire. It wasn’t the lighthouse. It wasn't an electrical transformer. It sure wasn’t the ghost of Cornwallis storming the port. I’ve talked with a few neighbors. Some saw the light, but I’m the only one I know of who took a picture. If anyone figures out what it was, please let me know. Oh, and since that night my husband doesn’t walk or talk in his sleep anymore. So I guess it’s a good thing I didn’t smother him with my pillow.
